I am a Colin Firth fan. I've seen him do brilliant work under other, better direction. Woody Allen's boring attempt at keeping his own work fresh here is so bad that not even the marvelous Firth could have saved this one. The single star I gave it belongs solely to Firth. The script struck me as yet another lame attempt by Allen to justify the right to continue working in his field of choice, but, given what we have learned about his past behavior, nothing short of genuine sincerity could ever help to redeem his questionable status as both an artist and a human being. The embarrassing fact that he took nude photos of Soon Yi at the same time when he was acting in a parental, adoptive role towards her two adoptive siblings is just one of several past transgressions which the film's theme can't help but evoke. With this film, he's only playing on the overused, trite, fantastical theme of **older man gets much younger woman to want him,** and doing it badly. My guess is that he has little idea as to how puerile and dull such a theme can sound if overplayed. His past performance in private terms gives it a tawdry flavor that really left a bad aftertaste for me.I'd prefer to see Firth in something finer that can showcase his talent better. All the same, the star is for him.I just love this movie, but it makes me sad that so many actors who have work for Mr. Allen have now turned against him. He really brings out the best in actors, and makes watching his movies such enjoyable experiences. It isn't fair for them to judge him or destroy all his great movies, and lifetime of work over allegation that have been through the court system and he was not found to be what or do what he was accused of. It seems to me public opinion has replace Common Law. That is wrong. There is no common sense left either. I stand by Mr. Woody Allen , he has brought so much laughter and joy to me through his movies. Those that accuse a person or won't work with him are wrong to have dismissed him, they should apologize to him. His movies are not violent, or vulgar, and filmed in beautiful locations. He is a very talented director as you see he brings out the actors have to offer. It would have been better had you actors say nothing, but for those who work for him and spent time on the set film have you no loyalty to this man. Will I do and will always.Truly awesome movie. Best line in movie is, "tell me something I don't already know". That would be that Woody Allen makes great movies.Thank you Woody for decades of laughter.
The scenery was absolutely stunning, the costumes gorgeous, and the music grand, although always off set never on. And none of the actors or even the extras seemed able to dance to it, which was weird. You'd think someone would have taught them a few steps of the Charleston. (Who knows what they were actually playing on set.) Then, there was the story itself that one could figure out immediately along with the ending. I kept hoping that there would be some sort of twist at the end, that the young girl really was gifted or wouldn't end up marrying the grumpy old guy with nothing to offer, but it's Woody Allen, so what can one expect? It's a great movie to look at and fall asleep to because there is no need to follow the story. There isn't one. Maybe you'll dream you are in 1920s France in summertime.Formulaic Woody. If he played that jazzy 20's number one more time as someone drives in a roadster, I swear I was going to do something serious. You can tell he's getting sclerotic, everything is repetitious, over and over. Characters are bloodless, without affect, and everything is so predictable. Woody plows that old man/teenage woman romance thing yet one more time, and there's nothing left, folks are leaving the theatre. Oddest scenes are when someone runs through the pro's and con's for the young girl to choose the grumpy, out of touch old man instead of the wealthy, handsome, entertaining zillionaire, they go through the list of attributes several times and never, well, not until near the end, does anyone mention the zillionaire is young! Oh, sweet hesus, Woody is like an old dog with a bone, a bone he can only gum at this point. You can put out all manner of polished garbage if you have the right amount of money I guess. As a general rule I stay away from Woody films. I didn't realize this was one of them until I'd already started it. Like some people have a certain smell about them, Woody's films all "smell" the same. It's not pleasant. There is very little to like about it. It does have nice scenery, but so do Microsoft desktop screensavers. No, not even Colin Firth could redeem it. In fact, his voice became downright annoying to listen to as the movie progressed. As I sat there allowing my mind and sanity to be accosted by this nonsense, I realized I could go do something better, and I promptly shut it off. But first, came here to complain about it. I obviously didn't read reviews on this before watching, but other times reading reviews has spared me, so maybe if you read this and then decide to go outside and do something, or watch a channel on YouTube and learn how to build something, you'll be better off.Had to nope out of the cultural hodgepodge of that opening scene. I don’t care if it’s the setting of the film. It’s the excuse people give themselves to do whatever they want. Plus, didn’t realize it was a woody allen film. Even his personal life aside, I’ve always found his films to be dull as dishwater. They’re not new of innovative or really even saying anything. I think essentially it’s just really trendy to say you like his films and keep up this appearance of recognizing quality when it’s just not interesting or charming. Movies TV => Blu-ray => Movies
