Eco-Friendly Durawood: Durawood is made from densely compressed recycled plastic milk jugs and soda bottles. It contains no waste-wood fiber so it doesnt absorb any water and wont rot, splinter or crack. Durawood is also fade resistant and will never require paint, stain or any kind of sealant.
Stainless Steel Hardware: We use rust resistant 316 marine-grade stainless steel hardware for our Durawood furniture, compared to 304 marine-grade used by our competitors, to ensure a longer outdoor life. All hardware is painted to match the color of the furniture you choose and strategically placed to conceal each bolt.
Mortise and Tenon Joints: This ancient form of carpentry is used where boards meet, to allow our furniture to fit together and help make it sturdier; rather than just being held together with nuts and bolts.
Smooth Finish: Every durawood part has a smoothed surface to reduce the amount of crevices where dirt and mildew can accumulate. We also round all edges for a clean, detailed finish.
Length: 20 in. Width: 28 in. Height: 38.5 in.
From the brand
How we got our start?
Nags Head Hammocks started out just the way you’d probably expect, with a beach-loving dude who was really into hand-making hammocks. Our first Nags Head Hammocks store opened back in 1974, in a converted cottage at about milepost 10.5 on the old beach road.
What makes our product unique?
Quality materials, a fundamental belief in handcrafting and decades of experience mean we not only have no trouble standing by what we make, but we do so proudly. We stand behind the promise that our hammocks, chairs and swings will be free of defects against materials and workmanship, period.
Why we love what we do?
At Nags Head Hammocks, we believe passionately in the value of experience. And not just in the sense that we’ve been at this now for nearly four decades; there’s a far more important type of experience that guides us still — yours.
Want a serious batch of toughness with your comfort? Here you go!
Our Durawood outdoor furniture is about as maintenance-free as it gets. In fact, we chose Durawood as the basis for a furniture line with our own coastal storm season in mind — your deck may blow to pieces out from under one of our Durawood chairs, but that heavy high-end seating will likely still be there, and in one piece, when it's over.
We don't call Durawood "hurricane proof" for nothin'!
Durawood itself is made from compounding recycled consumer plastic that's been rid of impurities. The resulting dense, rigid, easy-to-clean composite is about as heavy as rock, but looks just like painted wood, or in the case of our Cedar-colored variety, pretty close to wood itself — though unlike wood, Durawood can't absorb water, so it will never rot, splinter or crack, nor attract termites. It also never needs paint, stain or any other kind of sealant, yet holds up to pounding rains, flailing winds, salt spray, extreme temperatures and other environmental stresses. And we're hardly just blowing hot air here — on the Outer Banks, we know about heavy weather!
All of our Durawood furniture is put together with stainless steel hardware, which is not only tough against rust and corrosion, but also strikingly attractive when paired with the dense composite's white or Cedar-colored surfaces.
One final note: Should you ever find yourself in an actual hurricane, please refrain from going outside and testing your Durawood furniture for its weather-hardiness. Your chair or swing will almost certainly fare just fine; you, on the other hand, could very well blow away…
OUR DURAWOOD MATERIAL
Durawood is HDPE: High-density polyethylene, a polymer (plastic) designed to look and feel like wood. HDPE is all around you: in hula hoops, milk bottles, water pipes, and bottle caps. The HDPE material in your furniture is recycled from items like these.
But I don’t want furniture that feels “plasticky.”
This furniture feels anything but, largely thanks to extrusion. Extrusion molds the heated HDPE material into long lumber boards, as it were Play-Doh. Through this process, the HDPE gains the shape and texture of wooden lumber.
The classic wooden feel, redefined.
Poly lumber chairs never require painting: they’re dyed to the core during extrusion. They’re also infused during that process with UV-inhibitors, ensuring a lifetime of vivid colorfastness under the sun. Unlike wood, no moisture can penetrate the material, preventing rot. The polymer is so solidly bonded that it will never splinter nor crack during day to day use.
All "Stainless Steel" is NOT Created Equal.
“Stainless steel” can refer to a variety of alloys. Most outdoor furniture manufacturers’ stainless steel is “Type 304,” which meets the minimum standard for the “Stainless” designation. It’s the grade of steel used on tabletops, stoves, and refrigerators. Unfortunately, it’s also erroneously used as hardware on lesser outdoor furniture, leading these cheaper models to an early (and rusty) demise.
It’s Practically Elemental.
Unique to Type 316 is the presence of Molybdenum, an element which provides protection against moisture, particularly the saltwater air of marine environments. It’s known for keeping its shape and integrity, even when exposed to major changes in temperature. Type 316 sees heavy use in naval vessels: a testament to its unparalleled corrosion resistance.
ALL WEATHER RESISTANCE
Our all-weather Durawood lumber and high quality 316 marine-grade stainless steel hardware are built to withstand all four seasons and a range of climates including blazing sun, snowy winters, salt spray, and hefty winds.
Durawood lumber cleans easily with any cleaning wipes or a soft bristle brush with a mild cleanser. Our furniture does not absorb water and requires no painting, staining, or waterproofing.
Our Durawood lumber is made from 100% HDPE recycled consumer plastic that's been sterilized for safety and to eliminate impurities.
